Getting sick or sustaining an injury that requires medical attention is part of virtually everyone’s human experience.
Often times hospitals/healthcare centers can be scary and traumatic places for our most marginalized populations; especially those who have disabilities and chronic health conditions. Hospitals and Rehab Programs often boot you out when you may still be in need of additional care. With healthcare growing exceedingly expensive and private health insurance not covering the cost. Many folks are in need of alternative options that will help them maintain their quality of life.
Also, our elderly populations are seeking to age in place and don't want to spend the majority of their time in a perpetual loop of getting sick/injured and going to the hospital when some of their issues could have been prevented.
Lastly, many people living in rural areas simply do not have access to adequate healthcare and doctors equipped to service their unique needs.
Decolonizing Fitness offers Medical Exercise Training that can assist folks who no longer require immediate medial attention but can still benefit from healthcare related services.
I am a Physical Therapist Assistant and ACE Certified Medical Exercise Trainer. Essentially my credentials allow me to work collaboratively with healthcare teams, including developing and delivering specific and complementary exercise programs for folks with medical issues.

What is a Medical Exercise Specialist?
A Medical Exercise Specialist focuses on improving health and fitness conditions for those who have different medical concerns. Clients are typically referred to me after completing a rehab program and are still in need of improvement through a fitness program specific to their condition.
Personal Training vs Medical Exercise Training
Personal training is more focused on improving performance levels through cardiovascular activity and weight lifting. Whereas medical exercise may be more focused on improving your health and fitness through specific fitness programs that account for your medical conditions.
Personal trainers specializing in medical exercise DO NOT and CANNOT provide the services of licensed physical therapists, athletic trainers, chiropractors, registered dietitians. Instead, we offer comprehensive physical fitness programs that include:
• Endurance training
• Resistance training
• Flexibility training
I provide medical exercise training in these TWO categories:
The goal of rehabilitation conditioning is to restore a client’s level of physical fitness to their pre-injury or pre-disease state.
An example of a client who would benefit from rehabilitation conditioning through a personal training program is a person with a torn ACL. Upon the completion of post-surgery physical therapy, the client will need to train to regain lost strength, speed, endurance, etc. which is accomplished through a rehabilitation conditioning program.
Clients recovering from an extended illness or any condition that took them away from their regular physical fitness routine and resulted in a loss of muscle strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility are ideal candidates for rehabilitation conditioning.
Therapeutic Exercise/Exercise Therapy
Therapeutic exercise is best defined as a program of physical fitness that is prescribed to correct impairment, improve a physical function, or maintain a state of well-being. As a personal trainer specializing in therapeutic exercise, I will seek to accomplish one or more of the following goals:
• Enable ambulation
• Improve circulation
• Improve coordination and balance
• Improve exercise performance and endurance
• Improve muscle strength
• Improve respiratory capacity
• Loosen contracted muscles and tendons
• Mobilize joints
• Promote relaxation
• Reduce rigidity
The goal of a therapeutic personal training program is: to achieve an optimal level of physical fitness by the end of the training period. Therapeutic training is also designed to alleviate symptoms that are associated with specific conditions or ailments.
Clients who would benefit from a therapeutic exercise program include those with:
• Musculoskeletal disorders
• Metabolic diseases
• Disorders that affect balance and/or coordination
• Chronic joint or muscle pain
• Parkinson’s Disease to name a few...
Types of Exercises for Rehabilitation Conditioning and Therapeutic Exercise
Although medical exercises, and personal training programs will vary based on your individual needs, physical limitations and exercise goals. Most people will benefit from exercises such as:
